City of Townsville

Townsville City Council

Townsville, Capital of Northern Australia and Industry Powerhouse of the North

The City of Townsville is the largest city in Northern Australia.  With almost 200,000 residents and set to grow, Townsville is the major economic and service centre for North Queensland.  Townsville provides a laid back tropical lifestyle that is complemented by capital city comforts; no other Australian city boasts the diversity, lifestyle and economic potential that Townsville and the North Queensland Region enjoys.

Townsville is located about halfway between the tip of Cape York and Brisbane and boasts a stunning natural environment. The Ross River flows from the foothills of the Hervey and Mount Stuart ranges to its outlet in Cleveland Bay, where the CBD’s skyline is dominated by the distinctive Castle Hill and Magnetic Island lies just eight kilometres offshore.

The city is evolving, with its success underpinned by population growth and economic opportunities, as well as a diverse economy.  Significant industries in Townsville include retail trade, health and education services, government administration and defence, construction, mining, manufacturing, and property and business services.  Townsville is a global leader in tropical and marine research and innovation and a primary port and freight hub, particularly for the agricultural areas of the surrounding region and for the North West minerals province.
